Women's Institute

St Tudy WI will be reaching its 102nd Anniversary this year (October 2023) having been formed in 1921 at Tremeer in Lady May’s time.

Over the years, members have been meeting in St Tudy Village Hall every third Friday, with the exception of August – when we go out for the day to an agreed place of interest – and which, naturally, involves food at some point. In December we hold our very informal Christmas Party which usually includes a visiting choir or other musical entertainer and, of course – a delicious party spread!

We are part of a group of nearly 3,000 women throughout Cornwall who work together, while sharing laughter and friendship along the way.

We invite a variety of speakers to entertain, educate and enlighten us, such as Charity organisations, cookery and craft demonstrators, flower arrangers and wildlife/conservation experts to name but a few. Of course, we are always open to suggestions regarding any topic which may be of interest to members.

We are affiliated to the National Federation of the WI (NFWI), based in London, which keeps us informed of Resolutions to be discussed at the Annual Meeting and campaigns such as conservation issues and the general wellbeing of women and children. The NFWI is also where the decisions are make with regard to the running of the WI.

The Cornwall Federation of the WI (CFWI), based in Truro, holds a wide variety of events ranging from taking part in the Royal Cornwall Show, guided walking tours, buffet lunches, flower arranging, study days, camping weekends, fiendish quizzes, bird-watching, cream teas, fashion shows, down to learning new crafts such as embroidery and sugar craft. Almost anything is possible. The WI is what you make it.

The St Tudy WI has always played a large part in village life – helping out at various events – especially when food is required such as when the then Prince Charles and Camilla made a visit!

We are a friendly and happy group of ladies and welcome any new members or guests – it’s not a requirement to be a good cook or crafter to become a WI Member.

Should you attend a meeting as a paying guest (we welcome any non-members to join us and listen to our speakers for a small charge), then the fee paid will be reimbursed if you decide to join as a member on the night. We would love to see you! – Everyone has something to offer.

We are a warm, friendly, inclusive organisation, open to all women. Our membership is made up of women of all ages, backgrounds and interests.
