St Tudy Garden Produce Association (GPA) held its first meeting in the Methodist Chapel School Room on 10th November 1948. Annual subscription was set at 1/- (5p) and meetings were held once a month on Monday evening. During its first year GPA had 49 members. They bulk-purchased 3 tons of manure, 2 cwt bone meal, 42 bags of basic slag, 30 cwt of lime and 10 loads of sand!
In July 1949 the GPA held its first Best Garden Competition and first Open Show in August at the School Room. By 1950 members were meeting regularly in the winter months with talks on subjects such as sweet peas, pruning and vegetables. In 1952 the subscription was raised to 1/6 and on 7th July 1952 the GPA held its meeting at the new Village Hall for the first time. Annual Shows were arranged for daffodils in April, sweet peas in July, August for flowers, fruit, vegetables and cookery, and a final show in November for chrysanthemums and flower arranging.
Today
Today the GPA remains a friendly and lively club with approximately 45 members and still meets in the Village Hall on the second Monday evening of each month from October to March for a garden related lecture or illustrated film show. Annual membership is £10. The December meeting is the AGM and Christmas Party Night. There is one Annual Open Show in August with a wide range of categories and several of the original trophies being awarded. There is a Plant Sale and Coffee Morning in May at the Hall and another at The Clink in October. Some years the GPA organises a village hanging basket competition, outings and a summer tea party. The GPA is an affiliated member of the Royal Horticultural Society and the Cornwall Garden Society. Guests and new members are always welcome.
